Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
