An defense minister has confirmed that the MoD is currently looking into the potential security risks associated with Chinese-made cars, while staff have been instructed to refrain from talking about secret matters in all vehicles.
Security Advice for MoD Personnel
In a recent appearance on LBC, a defence minister addressed claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to talk about classified material while riding in Chinese cars.
He explained that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however noted that security is a issue in all contemporary cars.
Our department has a collection of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, to avoid having discussions at a classified level in any vehicle, because of the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in all automobile, to restrict those secret talks in protected areas. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about safety.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using all cars from China, the minister replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Wider Defence Background
The revelation follows claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off public transport and bring disruption to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly shining lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
This broader security environment highlights the significance of robust measures and caution in all areas of official activities, from transport usage to communication practices.
