As any significant awards ceremony nears, one notices a demand for the addition fresh award types to recognize unsung work and fill the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.
Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.
Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely that year
- A different innovative game missed out in 2019
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games scraped into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
