The Legendary Anime Ends a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and included numerous filler arcs. Starting in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will take a quarterly break until April, when the next major arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will produce a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” However, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime had a half-year pause that started in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to improve the animation quality and allow the comic to build a lead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to supply viewers with numerous fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although a few summary installments sprouted up during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the news, this may lead to a single installment of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with some instead covering more material or more to make up for scheduling.

It's the end of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of production, which focused on being on air for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course itself have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the following. Nowadays, anime production is structured in cours, with a couple at most releasing each year, allowing for improved visuals and greater accuracy to the source material.
